Is Uzbekistan safe? Practical tips for a calm trip
Uzbekistan is a calm and safe country for travellers, and people are friendly and helpful. As anywhere, a few simple habits make the trip even easier.
In general
Serious crime against tourists is rare. Pickpocketing can happen in crowded bazaars and on public transport, so keep your phone and wallet in a closed bag. The police are visible in the cities and often help tourists.
Documents
Carry your passport or a good copy of it — you need it for hotels, trains and, sometimes, document checks. Keep the original in the hotel safe on city days if you prefer, but take it on train days and trips out of town.
Taxis and roads
- Use the Yandex Go app or a driver arranged by your hotel or by us — prices are fixed and the route is tracked.
- Traffic can be fast: cross the street at crossings and traffic lights, and look both ways.
- Wear a seatbelt, also in the back.
Health and heat
- Drink bottled water, and wash fruit from the bazaar before eating it.
- From May to September, protect yourself from the sun: a hat, sun cream and plenty of water. Plan walks for the morning and evening.
- Pharmacies are easy to find in the cities. Travel insurance with medical cover is a good idea.
