About this tour

Itchan Kala, the walled inner town of Khiva, feels like an open-air museum: minarets, madrasahs and palaces packed inside clay walls, with families still living in its lanes. Walk it with a private guide who speaks your language, from the West Gate to the Kunya-Ark fortress and the forest of carved columns in the Juma Mosque.

Highlights

  • Kalta Minor — the unfinished turquoise minaret
  • The Juma Mosque and its forest of carved wooden columns
  • Kunya-Ark — the old fortress of the khans of Khiva
  • Stories told in your language, at your pace

How it works

Good to know

Can I climb a minaret?
Yes. The Islam Khoja minaret and the Kunya-Ark watchtower can be climbed for a small fee. The watchtower is the best place to see the walls and domes at sunset.
Is it good for children and older travellers?
Yes. Itchan Kala is small, flat and car-free, with tea houses to rest in. Only the minaret stairs are steep and narrow.
I arrive in Urgench. Can you pick me up?
Yes. Khiva is about 40 minutes from Urgench airport and railway station. We can add a car to bring you to your hotel or straight to the start of the tour.
When is the best time of day?
Morning, or late afternoon into the evening. The walls glow at sunset and the lanes are quiet after the day visitors leave.
